"The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen―for our communities, for animals and for the environment. With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100 countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better world. Young people identify problems in their communities and take action. Through service projects, youth-led campaigns and an interactive website, Roots & Shoots members are making a difference across the globe."
Teaching students to love, respect, and care for their community, environment, and the Earth, is important to Roots & Shoots and RBIS. Our Roots & Shoots committee works with students, teachers, and parents to make our Green Goals a reality. Our Green Goals at RBIS include:
- Integrating organic gardening into the science curriculum and classrooms
(For more information about our organic gardening program, please visit the Organic Garden page on our website)
- Offsetting our carbon footprint by planting 1,000 trees in Inner Mongolia each year
- Creating a campus-wide recycling program
- Encouraging the students and teachers to develop eco-friendly habits in their everyday activities (reducing, reusing, and recycling)
- Educating our community about the importance of taking care of the Earth and to foster an active interest in the environment around us
Last year we were successful in reaching our goal of planting 1,000 trees in Inner Mongolia! Ms. Hannah and Ms. Trixie traveled there themselves to help plant the trees bought by the RBIS community. Thank you to all the parents, teachers and students who worked so hard to make our tree-planting campaign a success. Lets do it again this year!
Trees can be bought during the winter performances. Student projects, hand-printed T-shirts and reusable bags will be sold with all proceeds going towards reaching our goal. A silent auction will be held as well. Stop by the Roots and Shoots table and help us make a difference!
Keep an eye out for our RBIS Recycle Center in the outdoor seating area next to the pick-up room. Parents, we encourage you to send in your (clean) recyclable items. Each week, the recyclables are picked up and sent to the recycling plants. All money made from the sale of recyclable materials goes towards our goal of planting 1,000 trees.
