2010 cultrual village participant info
Dear RBIS Parents,
Thank you for your interest in Earth Day. Every year RBIS parents do a fantastic job in helping RBIS teachers to organise Earth Day. We would like to thank all of the parents who have worked on this event in the past and we would like to welcome the new parents. Without your help this event would not be possible. This year Earth Day will be:
Saturday April 24th
Time: 10.00 am – 3.00 pm
Where: Shanghai Zoo
Cultural Villages
Every year RBIS parents organise Cultural Villages. Each country has a large white tent that they fill with displays, information, games and activities that reflect their country. The day is a lot of fun for parents working on the villages as it gives them a chance to meet and interact with their children’s classmates and their parents. Last year there were 9 Cultural Villages organised by RBIS Parents.
This year the Cultural Village can be divided into 3 functions.
1. Country and Culture Information
o Traditional Clothes
o Traditional Dance
o Traditional Songs
o Traditional Games
o Artefacts Display
o Language
2. Environmental Information of Your Country
o Environment Statistics Information
o What their country is doing to reduce waste or a positive environment initiative.
o Recycling information of their country
o Information on an endangered species from their country
o We recommend that you use the United Nations Environment Programs GEO report www.unep.org/geo for your statistics/environment information and Earthnet www.earthnet.com
3. Child Centred Game or Activity
o A craft or a game for children to participate in that is related to environmental education.
Information for Participation:
• Each Cultural Village will have a tent (3m x 3m x 3m)
• We recommend having at least 4 parents working on a village.
• There will be an Earth Day room for parents to use. It will be full of resources for you to use and work from. It will be available from 7.45 am – 3.45 pm.
• Each Cultural Village can use up to 200RMB to organise their Cultural Villages but Earth Day is about the environment so parents should Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, be creative and use your contacts to borrow things.
• Please try to avoid the use of electricity. We can provide electricity for your tent if it is 100 % necessary but because it is Earth Day and a day for small children we would prefer not to have electricity.
• We recommend that you have a Chinese speaker and an English speaker present and bilingual signs and information, as the crowd is a mixture of foreigners and Chinese. If you need help with having information translated please ask Ms. Linda. We need at least 3 days for a 1 day document.
• Cultural Villages also have the option of performing a dance or act on the big stage.
