Our History

Our school opened its doors in 1997 with just two classes serving eighteen preschool students. Since then, our student population has steadily increased. In 2012 HQIS became an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School authorized to teach the Primary Years Program (PYP).

Image Description

Shanghai Hong Qiao International School (HQIS) was founded in 1997 as Rainbow Bridge International School, starting with just 18 preschool students within the Shanghai Zoo campus. Over the years, the school steadily expanded its academic offerings, launching its Elementary School and establishing itself as a respected institution within Shanghai’s international education community.

A major milestone came when the renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall visited the school, collaborating with students and teachers to design the Apes Pavilion at the zoo — a project that highlighted HQIS’s commitment to sustainability and experiential learning.

In the following years, HQIS introduced a full international curriculum from Early Childhood through High School, adopting the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework and strengthening its STEAM and language programs. With a growing student body and state-of-the-art campus facilities, HQIS continues to nurture globally-minded learners prepared to make a positive impact on the world.
